Gotthard 2016: pioneering technology – now and then

Major events in the history of European railways are rare: On June 1, 1882, the private railway company “Gotthard Bahn” opened the Gotthard tunnel for traffic. At the time, the construction of this tunnel through the Alps was an unprecedented feat of engineering, and one which opened Switzerland’s north-south axis to continental travel, transforming the alpine cul-de-sac into a transit hub for travelers and cargo.

Exactly 134 years later, the Gotthard base tunnel is now open. As the original Gotthard tunnel was then, the new one is the longest railway tunnel in the world today, at 57 kilometers. Switzerland has therefore once again accomplished a pioneering feat in the heart of Europe that will significantly boost the economic development of the continent by increasing transport capacity to keep up with the rising demand. The Gotthard base tunnel forms the core of the Rhine-Alpine corridor. In terms of volume, it is the most important axis for cargo transport in Europe and symbolizes the openness and close ties of Switzerland with its European partners.

The tunnel represents traditional Swiss values such as innovation, foresight, reliability, and precision. To create the tunnel, boring machines were put to work on either side of the Gotthard massif and, after boring their way through tens of kilometers of rock, met in the middle with centimeter precision. Thanks to the extremely well-coordinated efforts of everyone involved, the base tunnel can now be opened for traffic a full year earlier than planned.

The tunnel also symbolizes the continuous outstanding performance of Swiss industry: major technical systems facilitating modern, safe and energy-efficient tunnel operation were provided by Swiss companies, just as they were 132 years ago.

At ABB we are proud to have played a part in the success of this Swiss project of the century by providing the power supply for the tunnel as well as the energy-efficient and reliable digital control system for the ventilation system, which is the most powerful in the world.

The year 2016 is an important one for ABB, too, because it marks 125 years of ABB pioneering technologies in Switzerland for the world. Our predecessor company BBC, founded in 1891, was involved in the electrification of the first Gotthard tunnel and supplied the electrical equipment for most of the locomotives on the Gotthard route.

The opening of the Gotthard base tunnel through the Alps is yet another milestone in the history of our company. We look forward to celebrating this epochal technological masterpiece with our Swiss and European partners in this important year for Switzerland and ABB.
