不管你是不是英语专业的，英式英语和美式英语之间多年的爱恨情仇都应该有所耳闻吧？
前段时间，两国网友甚至在推特上掀起骂战，嘲笑对方的英语不够正宗。
在最新一期Tip Talk中，美国小哥Nick和来自英国的小哥Greg(没错，就是你们熟悉的，经常玩穿越的方丹，Gregory Fountain)就因为单词拼写掐起来了……

In the early 18th century, English spelling was not standardized. Differences became noticeable after the publishing of influential dictionaries.
18世纪早期，英语的拼写方式没有统一的标准。拼写方面的差异变得明显是在两本极有影响力的字典出版之后。
Today's British English spellings mostly follow Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language 1755, while many American English spellings follow Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language.
今天英式英语的拼写方法大多是沿用1755年约翰逊编纂的《英语词典》，美式英语的拼写则沿用了韦伯斯特编写的《美国英语词典》。
Webster's 1828 dictionary had only -or and is given much of the credit for the adoption of this form in the United States.
1828年的《美国英语词典》用的都是-or结尾的拼写，美国人民会采用这种拼法，多半归功于这本词典。
By contrast, Johnson's 1755 dictionary used -our for all words still so spelled in Britain.
相比之下，1755年的《英语词典》中，那些用-our来结尾的单词，则被英国人一直沿用至今。
下面来总结一下英美拼写的差异：
英式英语中单词结尾是-re的，美语中通常写作-er。
英式英语中单词结尾是-our的，美语中通常写作-or。
注：在-our的读音是[a?]的情况下，英美的拼写都是相同的，比如hour，flour。
英式英语中动词结尾是-ize/-ise的，美语中都拼成-ize。
英式英语中单词结尾是-yse的，美语中都拼成-yze。
英式英语中，动词以“元音+l”结尾的，在动词变形时，要双写l。在美式英语中，l不双写。
英式英语中，双元音拼写的ae或oe，在美式英语中只留一个e。
注：在美式英语中，有些术语，如archaeology(考古学)仍然保留了ae的标准拼法，但archeology也是可以接受的。
英式英语中，某些名词结尾是-ence的，在美语中拼为-ense。
英式英语中，某些名词结尾是-ogue的，在美语中拼为-og或-ogue。
总地来说，英式英语倾向于保留各种外来语融入英语时的原本拼写，而美式英语则会让单词的拼写和发音一致。

British ?American
答案：英式拼写。Cheque支票，美式英语写作check。
2. You know how to change a tyre, don't you?
British ?American
答案：英式拼写。Tyre轮胎，美式英语写作tire。
3. He was wearing black jeans and a grey shirt.
British ?American
答案：英式拼写。Grey，灰色，在美式英语里写作gray。
一个巧妙的记法，在英国England就是grey，在美国America就是gray。
4. If you want to lose weight, stop eating so many donuts.
British ?American
答案：美式拼写。Donuts，甜甜圈，在英式英语里写作doughnut。
5. We have a special English program for foreign students.
British ?American
答案：美式拼写。Program，项目，在英式英语里写作programme。
6. That old pizza in the fridge has mould on it!
British ?American
答案：英式拼写。mould 霉，美式英语写作mold。
7. That jewelry store in the mall was just robbed.
British ?American
答案：美式拼写。Jewelry ，珠宝，在英式英语里写作jewellery 。
8. I can't find my pajamas.
British ?American
答案：美式拼写。Pajamas，睡衣，在英式英语里写作pyjamas 。
9. Do you think a grief counselor could help them?
British ?American
答案：美式拼写。counselor 顾问，英式英语写作 counsellor。
10. Her speciality is criminal law.
British ?American
答案：英式拼写。speciality，专长，美式英语写作specialty。
