很多人会翻译为《什么是诺言》，些许是因为离不开这首歌的背景。Chris Medina和相恋8年的女孩求婚并且最后两人走到了一起。可原本以为是幸福的开始时，谁知噩梦来临。美丽的女孩因为车祸导致脑部受到重创，经过医生的抢救，康复后她只有2岁孩子的智力，生活完全不能自理。上帝像和他们开了一个玩笑。
Chris Medina却始终对女孩不离不弃，为了赚更多钱让妻子受到更好的治疗过上更好的生活，Chris Medina参加了美国偶像，虽然最后他在全国24强就止步了，但这首《What are words》却牢牢印在听者的心中。
